What is FreeBSD?

FreeBSD is an operating system, that is used on servers, desktop computers and embedded platforms. Its advanced networking, security and storage features have made FreeBSD the operating system of choice for many of the busiest web sites and most pervasive embedded networking and storage devices.

The FreeBSD base system is separate from third-party software. This makes it a robust and reliable system. FreeBSD has been developed continually by a large community of code contributers and maintainers since the 90s.

Learn more about FreeBSD at the official website of The FreeBSD Project and the FreeBSD Handbook. Find technical support and discuss FreeBSD related topics in the FreeBSD Forums.

The UNIX philosophy.

FreeBSD decends from UNIX BSD and as such, it is a preferred operating system for users, who follows the UNIX philisophy:

Do one thing well. Keep interfaces small and clean. Compose complexity from modular, simple and reliable parts. Prefer clarity over cleverness.

What is a user group?

A user group, such as FreeBSD, UNIX and Linux user groups, is a group of people, who shares knowledge, insights and experiences in a friendly, relaxed and open minded atmosphere. It is common to share ideas, projects and troubleshooting together.

Historically, computer user groups were much more common and necessary, because documentation and support was sparse in the early years of personal computing.
